My Story - Marianne Chan

29 August 2019 Posted in My Story

This month our My Story candidate is our August 'Temp of the Month', Marianne Chan.

1. Tell me a little about where you grew up and what it was like.

I was born and raised in Singapore and being in a culturally diverse country of Chinese, Malay, Indian and Eurasian people, it teaches one to respect others for their different beliefs and customs. Singapore is a small country with over 5 million people in a tiny place no bigger than 720 square kilometres. It’s bustling 24/7 and a person has to work hard in order to stand out.

2. Why did you choose the career you have worked in?

I did my university degree at University of Auckland and graduated in 2000 with a B.Commerce. I majored in Marketing and Management and had always wanted to have a corporate career. After graduating I moved back to Singapore and started my career in HR. After a few years my husband and I started a commercial cleaning company and the company grew from a 4 men operation to a staff strength of over 65 staff in 3 years. We ran the company for 10 years before deciding to move to Auckland to raise my daughter here. While my daughter was growing I took several years to be a full time Mum. I had volunteered a lot during those years and now as my daughter is a teenager and does not require her mummy so much, I decided to get back into the work force. I have always enjoyed administrative work and thrive on the challenges.

3. What was it about NZ that attracted you?

I love the people, the balance of lifestyle where one can enjoy sports and recreation and not be bogged down with work or studies.

4. How have you found living and working in NZ?

It was a huge change to move from a full time mother and back to a working environment. But the people around me, my colleagues, Alpha has been so supportive throughout the whole process. Took a bit of time to get into a routine and now enjoying every bit of it.

5. Can you tell me a little about your experience with Alpha, and how we have been involved in your journey?

Right from the start Alpha has provided that care, concern patience and support with me. The continued follow up to check on how I was doing, to the special events they hold for their temps have made working with Alpha a pleasure.
